The headline figure is your equivalent salary โ the amount you would need to earn in the target city to keep the same standard of living you have today. If the target city is cheaper, that number is lower than your current salary, which means your money stretches further. The breakdown table then shows where the difference comes from, month by month.
Tax figures are taken directly from the published rules โ federal brackets and the standard deduction from IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32, the Social Security wage base from the SSA, and state and city rates from each authority's own schedule.
Cost of living uses two public data sets. Rent is the HUD FY2026 Fair Market Rent for each city. Other prices, and the equivalent salary, use the BEA 2024 Regional Price Parities for each metro, with spending patterns informed by BLS Consumer Expenditure data and wage benchmarks from the BLS Occupational Employment survey. Treat the results as a well-grounded estimate of relative cost, not as a quote for any specific apartment or grocery bill.
Tax tables are rebuilt once a year, when the IRS publishes the inflation adjustments and states finish enacting their rates โ the figures here are for the 2026 tax year. Rent and price data were last updated in October 2026 (HUD FY2026 rents, BEA 2024 price levels). Every figure is an estimate for planning: your own rent, commute and lifestyle will move the numbers up or down.

Everything you need to know about salary vs cost of living comparisons
It takes a salary in one US city and tells you what you would need to earn in another city to live the same way. It applies 2026 federal, state, city and payroll tax, then layers on local housing, grocery, transport, healthcare and utility costs for 78 cities across 39 states.
Earning at the rate of an expensive market while living in a cheap one. Someone on a San Francisco salary living in Tulsa is doing it โ the income is set by a metro with a BEA price level of 115.6 while the expenses are set by one at 89.2. It is the main reason remote workers relocate, and the remote work calculator prices it exactly.
New York City is the most expensive mainland metro in our data at 187, and it is one of the few places that charges a city income tax on top of state income tax. A single person wanting genuine breathing room rather than just survival is generally looking at six figures. Run your own household size through the calculator rather than trusting a headline figure, because the answer moves a lot with how many people the salary supports.
Of the states covered here, Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Nevada, Washington and Alaska levy no state income tax on wages. That is a real advantage, but it does not automatically make them cheaper โ Seattle and Miami have some of the highest rents in our data, so the housing cost can easily outweigh the tax saving. The calculator nets both effects.

The tax side is precise: 2026 federal brackets and standard deductions, the $184,500 Social Security wage base, the actual bracket structure for each state, and local income tax where it applies. The cost side uses HUD FY2026 Fair Market Rents and BEA 2024 price levels, not a survey of specific apartments, so treat the expense figures as a well-grounded estimate rather than a quote.
That is one of the better uses for it. Converting your current salary into the equivalent for a new city gives you a defensible number to anchor on, and the negotiation letter generator turns that number into a draft you can send.
